TRANSFORMATIONS
Transformations represent a fundamental shift in your character and how they interact with the world. These are optional aspects of a character’s identity that the GM can give out during a campaign as part of the narrative or, at their discretion, present as an option during character creation. Transformations provide both a mechanical benefit and a drawback. Taking a transformation card requires you to buy into the concept of the exchange, taking on the burden to reap the benefit. Because of this, we recommend that players remind GMs of their transformations' negative effects whenever they’re relevant to help fulfill and reinforce the fiction of the transformation. Transformation cards do not count toward your loadout maximum. When your character gains a transformation, add the card to your loadout as if it were part of your character’s heritage. Consider how this transformation changes your character physically and psychologically—if you need inspiration, each transformation includes questions to help you. If there are details you’d like to incorporate into your character that go beyond the features on a transformation card, work with your GM to explore how they might manifest in your campaign’s narrative. A PC can't have more than one transformation.
GRANTING TRANSFORMATIONS
GMs should discuss transformations with their players before incorporating them into their campaigns. A transformation can deeply impact a PC’s narrative journey, so it’s best to ensure this aspect of the game supports the story your players want to tell and is something they’ll enjoy. Some of the transformations presented here are easy to introduce during a campaign as a narrative development. For example, the vampire or werewolf transformation could be gained when the campaign’s major villain targets a PC with a significant attack. A PC who gains the reanimated or ghost transformation might have died in a place of great magic or made a story-altering bargain in exchange for their resurrection. These transformations can also be part of character creation. Maybe a PC was born a werewolf and seeks to control this aspect of their lineage, or a PC is a long-dead ghost who haunts the party to protect the living. Some transformations are more likely to be taken at character creation, such as the shapeshifter or demigod. However, they can still be introduced as a character twist during a campaign. It’s ultimately up to you which transformations are available at character creation and how they become available throughout play—decide what works best for you, your players, and the story you’re telling together.
